      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. Today, I'm here with the Bestop Trektop NX Soft Top in Black Twill fitting all 1997 and 2006 TJ Wranglers with full doors. This is gonna be a premium soft top replacement if you're looking to replace your soft top that is worn, damaged, or faded over time. This is also gonna be a great option if you're looking to replace any of that hardware since this comes with all of the hardware needed to install it or you have a hard top and you're looking to switch over to a soft top. So like I mentioned, this is a premium top because of the twill material used. The twill material will give you a deep black look. And you're also getting some tinted windows and a fastback look with this so you're gonna have a luxury and sleek look to this soft top. You're also getting a couple of other different features like a flip back Sunrider feature and the ability to turn this into a bikini top whenever you'd like. Well, at the moment, because this is a premium top, it will be at a premium price point at roughly $1000 on the page right now. However, I definitely think that the quality makes up for that price. Other less expensive options won't come with all of the hardware needed to install it and will just be replacement fabric or you'll be getting that Black Diamond standard fabric material. So, personally, I think that this soft top is worth the price. And it comes with a limited lifetime warranty to keep a peace of mind in your investment. So install is gonna be very easy at one out of three wrenches. However, I would stress that you let this sit out in the sun before you install it to let the fabric stretch out a bit and have a little bit of give. However, it's nothing you can't get done in your driveway in roughly two hours. So speaking of the install, let's jump into that now. The tools that I used for my install today were a drill, a magnetic screwdriver, an 8-millimeter wrench, a Phillips head screwdriver, a 10-millimeter socket, a Phillips head bit, and an impact wrench. So the first step to removing our soft top is to remove our windows, I'm gonna start with our back window. Next, we can move over to our side windows and we can unhook it from our belt rail retainer and our door surround. And then do the same thing for the other side. Next, we can flip down our visors and unlatch our header from both sides. Then we can flip up our Sunrider feature. So next, we can pull this pin on either side to release our soft top to fold it all the way back. This side is released, I'm gonna go release the other side real quick, then we can fold it. So before we fold our soft top all the way down, we do wanna disconnect our bow system. Our pull pins just like this one up here, they have snapped off so we do have it held in by some hardware. And this is another perfect example of why you would want to upgrade to a new top to upgrade all of your hardware. So this most likely will not apply to you. However, I'm using a Phillips head screwdriver and an 8-millimeter wrench to disconnect our hardware. And like I mentioned this, this will usually be a pull pin just like our pin actuator on the door surround. Now, we can move over to the other side. So now, we can completely fold everything back and shimmy the soft top right off the Jeep. So what I usually like to do is try to fold it up the best you can so it's easier to completely take off. So it might be helpful to grab a friend and you can fully remove your soft top. So our next step is to remove our door surrounds. They're gonna be held in by two knobs up top. All you have to do is take those out and then pop the door surround out of place. And then you can do the same thing on the other side. So our last step is to remove our tailgate bar retainer. I'm going to be removing this with a 10-millimeter socket. So, obviously, I can't put two soft tops on the table to show you guys the difference but I still did wanna show you the difference in materials here. So as you can tell right off the bat, this is gonna be a more premium material than your factory soft top. The twill is gonna have a deeper tone to it and a darker black look, which will assist in a very sleek look as well as a luxurious look. And it's also gonna resist any fading over time. So the twill material will actually be a little bit heavier weight, be a little bit softer at the touch, and it's gonna be more durable than your factory soft top. This is made of 30-ounce, three-layer fabric as to where your factory soft top is usually a black diamond material, is a thinner vinyl, and is roughly 28 ounces. Bestop also uses a 130-gauge polyester industrial thread for all of the seams. So those are gonna hold up over time and make sure that your soft top stays intact. The zippers are also gonna be an upgrade since they are heat treated. And Bestop does provide some lubricant in the package to avoid these from seizing, which we all know can be very annoying. The windows will also be a little bit darker, at 35% tint, which will be DOT approved and those are gonna assist in that sleek, luxurious look as well as help out with any insulation and some protection inside of the cab. So as you can tell, the corner of the actual soft top will be integrated in the back and side windows. This is gonna connect all the windows around the back so you can take them all off at the same time and get that bikini top effect. The only thing that I don't like about that is that you can't fold your soft top all the way back. However, you still have the Sunrider feature and you can double your top as a bikini top so I think that is a fair trade-off.So let's get our new Bestop installed. So our first step is to install our door surrounds. They should just pop right into place. So you wanna make sure all of your holes are lined up and you can insert the knobs, and thread them down. So now we can do the same thing on the other side. You wanna make sure that this front part lines up in the channel. So our next step is to install our tailgate bar retainer. You will have to locate the left and the right tailgate bar retainers since they are side-specific and you can line them up. If you already have holes in your tailgate, you can skip this step. However, if you do not have holes there, you will need to drill two 1/8-inch holes and then deburr the hole with a silicone sealant. After that, you can install the provided screws. However, we have already drilled these out and we have rivnuts in place so we are just gonna use our provided hardware. So our next step inside the Jeep is to install our puddle bar or our bow. This is just going to slide in place in between our door surrounds and this will resist any puddling up on the soft top when it does rain. So you will have to bend this up and stick that in place. And then you can peel back the adhesive strip. So now we're ready to attach our bow assembly to our header. You will have a driver and a passenger side. The driver side hole will be closer to the top and then the passenger side hole will be just a notch down. So you wanna make sure that they are installed on the correct sides. So all you have to do is slide the bow on to the header, making sure that the pull pin is facing the inside. Once those are in place, you can take your screws and screw it into place. You will have two screws per side. And I'm just using a Phillips head screwdriver. Once those are in place, we can move over to the other side. So with our header upside down, now we can attach our fabric to the header assembly. So you're gonna actually tuck it underneath. So you're gonna take your pan head screws. You also have oval screws, we are going to save those for the outside portion. But you're going to start with the center. I'm using a Phillips bit on a drill. So now we can install our oval head screw where this little rip in the fabric is. So our next step is to install our rear bow. So you can flip up the backside of our fabric and there will be a little pocket in here where you can insert it. It is curved so I would just make sure that the arch is at the top because you want it to bow the top. So after that is in, you can attach the J-hooks on the end and that's gonna keep them in place. So now we're ready to install this on our Wrangler. So as you guys saw when I installed the soft top, I attached the bow right here. All you have to do is pull that pin and make sure it sets into place and it will clip in. So there is going to be a buckle right here that we are gonna wrap around our roll bar. This is gonna prevent any flapping in the wind. So Bestop will provide us with some heavy-duty nylon straps, as well as some plastic J-hooks that we can hook into our tub and attach to the strap on our soft top in order to keep it tight. So you can attach those the same way, making sure that the hook part is facing outward and the strap is laying flat. So our next step is to install our rear window. All we have to do is slide the top portion into the C-channel. So in order to give ourselves a little bit more slack for putting on the quarter windows, we are gonna open our Sunrider feature. So now we can install our quarter window so I am going to start the zipper on the top and also start it on the rear window. But I'm not gonna zipper up everything down just yet.So after we have the zipper started, we can tuck our window into the door surround and then do the same thing for our belt retainer down here. So after you have all of your tabs in your belt retainers, you can zipper up the top portion of the window and fold the Velcro over. So after our windows are zippered and we closed our Sunrider feature, all we have to do is tuck in these tabs into our door surround. And you can do the same thing on the other side. So our last step is to install our tailgate bar and zipper down our back window. So there's a C-channel on the bottom of your rear window, all you have to do is slide the tailgate bar on. Once that's on and centered, you can tuck the tailgate bar into the retainers by just folding down. Next, we can zipper our rear windows. So once you have that zippered, now we can tuck in our bottom flap into the tailgate bar retainer on both sides. Now you're all set. So that's gonna wrap it up for my review and install. If you have a 1997 to 2006 TJ with full doors and you're looking for a premium soft top replacement, you can find the Bestop Trektop NX Soft Top in Black Twill right here at extremeterrain.com.
