      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. So today, I'm here with the Rugged Ridge XHD rear bumper fitting all 1987 to 2006 YJ and TJ Wranglers. So if you're shopping around and you're looking for a full-width rear bumper that's gonna add some heavy duty rear end protection and a number of different benefits, this option by Rugged Ridge is gonna be a really good one to take a look at. So diving deeper into those extra benefits that you're seeing out of this rear bumper, you're gonna get a cut out for a larger wheel and tire. You're also gonna get a cut out for your factory hitch and a couple of recovery points. This is also gonna be for those YJ and TJ owners that are looking to refresh the rear end of their Wrangler with a more aggressive and an off-roady look and looking to pair this with any HD armor that they already have on the Wrangler since this fits perfectly with them. So this is gonna be one of the more expensive options at roughly $500, but I think that's fitting considering that this has a lot more of an in-depth design compared to those other simplistic options that you may be seeing on the page. So speaking about those other options, those are great options if you're looking for something that's more simplistic and budget-friendly. But if you're looking for something that has a boxier, more off-road feel to it, you're looking for, all of the bells and whistles, you're looking for that function as well as the form. This is definitely gonna be a great option to choose from. So install is gonna be a pretty easy one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. You're just gonna need a couple of basic hand tools to get the job done. So speaking of the install, let's jump into that now. The tools that are used for my install were an impact wrench, a 19-millimeter, and 18-millimeter open-ended wrench, a 3/8 inch drive ratchet, a three-inch extension, a 3/16 inch deep socket, a 10-millimeter, and an 18-millimeter socket. So to kick off this install, you do wanna take off the spare tire. That's just gonna give us a little bit more room to work with, so I'm gonna use a 13/16 inch socket and a small extension to do that. So our next step is to take off our end caps and you're gonna need a 10-millimeter socket and a ratchet or an impact wrench. There are two bolts up top and then we have one on the bottom that we need to remove in order to get our end cap off. Once those three bolts are removed, we can pop our end top off. So now, we need to remove the two nuts that are on the studs that are holding our bumper on to our frame here. I'm gonna be using a 19-millimeter wrench in order to do that. All right. So once we have all of those nuts removed over the stud, we can fully remove our bumper. So before we go ahead and mount up our new bumper on our TJ, I wanted to show you guys side by side of the benefits that you're getting out of your new bumper compared to your stock bumper. So right off the bat, you can tell that there's a lot more going on in design with this new rear bumper compared to your plain stock rear bumper. Now, I do like the boxy feel that's going on. This is also gonna give you some more surface area for better protection on the rear end of your TJ. You have some angled upside ends for better departure angles, and you have a couple of different benefits that your stock bumper is not able to give you like a large cut out in the middle for a larger wheel and tire if you were ever looking to do that in the future as well as a small cutout on the bottom so you're able to use an aftermarket or your factory toe hitch. Now, you also are getting D-ring shackles with this. That's gonna give you a solid recovery point. Now, they're not bolted up to our rear bumper right now because when we install this, we'll be sandwiching the bumper in between our D-ring shackles as well as the frame. And that's gonna make for a very solid recovery point, which I do really like out of the design of this bumper. Not only is this gonna be designed to be a lot better than your factory rear bumper, but it's also gonna be a lot stronger made of heavy-duty plated steel. You have wrap around ends instead of the plastic ends that you saw me take off before, so this is gonna provide some more protection to the rear end of your Wrangler. And it's got this textured black powder coat finish on it which I do really like for an aggressive and off-road appearance, and it's also gonna protect that steel underneath from any rust or corrosion. Now enough about our two bumpers side by side, let's go bolt up our new one. So we do have to install a couple of brackets before we can actually install our full rear bumper. Now, you are gonna have a couple of different brackets in the package. Now, this rear bumper is compatible with CJs, YJs as well as TJs, so you are gonna have TJ-specific brackets for this rear bumper. Now, we're gonna put in our support bracket into the inside of our frame where our studs were on our factory bumper right next to our body mount. We're just going to put this in place around the body mount and leave that there so we can mount up our bracket. So now we can line up our support block. This is gonna push our rear bumper out, and you are gonna have a number of different holes that you wanna line up in your frame. You're gonna have a TJ-specific bolt pattern on the back of here, but now we're gonna take our provided hardware and spread that into our block. Now, we don't wanna tighten this down just yet, but we do wanna thread these in so they're snug, and our other bolts are lining up in our frame. And at the end, we can go back and tighten everything down. So next, we have to attach this inside portion of our block to our frame. Now, you are gonna have holes in your frame in order to do that. You may have to widen them, but we also have this tab nut that we're gonna wedge in between our frame and our gas tank here so we can bolt this to the frame. I do really like this design by Rugged Ridge. A lot of companies will actually have you bolt...try to squeeze a bolt or a nut up in here, and you don't have a lot of room. So I do like this tab nut design that they have. Makes it a lot easier. So we can position that in place. Now, again, we're not gonna tighten anything down, but we wanna make sure everything is snug so everything lines up. Now we can take our second bolt, put that through. So now we can do the same thing on the other side and then we can mount up our rear bumper in that little neck there. Then we can grab this. For the moment, I'm gonna I leave it like that. Don't wanna tighten anything down just yet. We can go underneath with our welded nut tub and attach to the other side. So now we can take an 18-millimeter wrench and go ahead and tighten all of these down. Now, for this bottom bolt, you could use a socket since the body mount is not in the way. But keep it simple, we're just going to wrench that down. Now, we're gonna use an 18-millimeter socket for this side just to quicken up the process. And now for that top one, you still will have to use that 18-millimeter wrench. Now, we can do the same thing on the inside bolt. I'm gonna use an 18-millimeter socket. So making sure you have your necessary hardware and your D-ring shackles ready, we can go ahead and mount our bumper up on top of our support blocks, and you will have six holes on either side that you want to line up. Now, there are two smaller bolts that we are going to thread into the top. So now, like I mentioned before, we are gonna sandwich our bumper in between our frame as well as our D-ring shackle. So with your longer hardware, we're going to bolt that through. So after you have all of your bolts in place and threaded in, we can go back with our 18-millimeter socket and tighten everything down. After our bumper is on and tightened down, we can go ahead and reinstall our spare tire. Then we can tighten down the lugs with our 13/16 inch deep socket. So that's gonna wrap it up for my review and install. Make sure you like and subscribe. And for more videos like this, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
