Merideth: Hey guys, so today we're checking out the Rugged Ridge hood catches in textured black, fitting all 2007 and 2018 JK Wranglers. Now, when it comes to maintenance, one of the parts that you may not have expected to change is your factory hood catches. Now, a lot of the time because the factory latches are made of a rubbery or plastic material, they eventually wear out and begin to stretch and they can cause some hood flutter while you're driving, which can be incredibly annoying. And they also get faded and don't look the best, but this option by Rugged Ridge will be a solution to all of those problems. These will freshen up the look and also the function of the latches by having a solid hood catch, to prevent any flutter, not to mention they're very easy to use and work in a similar fashion to the factory ones. Now, these will be made of a heavy-duty aluminum material, so they won't have the ability to stretch out and will remain durable for years to come thanks to not only the quality build here, but also the texture black powder coat on top. Now those are gonna match incredibly well with any other textured accessories that you have on your JK already and just add to an offroad and very sporty look. Now, they will be double adjustable here, so you can customize it to your personal preference as far as fitment is concerned. And it's going to come with everything that you need in order to get these onto your JK, including all of the hardware and all of the gaskets, to make sure that this is not going to damage or scratch your paint. Now, when it comes to prices, it will come in right around the $150 mark. Now, what I like about this option is that not only this has the adjustability some other choices may not have, but this also comes in a fully black construction. So where some other choices for black hood catches always usually have the stainless steel hardware included. But if you're chasing a fully blacked outlook, then this will be a good choice. Not to mention there are some less expensive choices that will usually have a factory style design or maybe a factory style replacement, or they're going to just be for covers for these factory ones. Now, there are other lockable options as well, but if you're not necessarily concerned about security, if you're just looking for a good-looking durable and adjustable latch, then this is gonna be right up your alley. As far as install is concern, I'm gonna give this a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, taking you about 30 minutes to get the job done with some basic hand tools. Now, speaking of the install, one of our installers here is gonna show you how to get these onto your JK. So that's gonna wrap up my review. Let's go ahead and get into the install.Man: The tools you're gonna need for this installation include an impact gun or ratchet, a long extension and a short extension, a 13-millimeter swivel socket, a number five HEC socket, 10 and 8-millimeter sockets, a 16-millimeter wrench, and number 4 and 5 Allen wrenches. What is up? Today, I'm gonna be showing you how to install a pair of aluminum hood catches from Rugged Ridge. Let's get started. To begin the uninstall process, we're gonna start by removing the air box. To do that, we're gonna need an 8 and 10-millimeter sockets with an impact gun. All right, to start, we're gonna loosen this clamp with our 8-millimeter socket. And also, I grabbed an extension to make it a little easier.Next, we're gonna grab our 10 mil socket and remove these two bolts from the air intake pipe. Right now we can remove the air box. Now we're gonna remove the factory hood catches. To do that, we're gonna use a 13-millimeter swivel socket with an extension and our impact gun. On the lower hood catch, the bolt is almost impossible to see. So you're gonna have to get your hand in there to feel around for it.All right, so the nut is directly behind the lower catch here. I got my left hand in here feeling around. Once I locate it, I'm gonna put my socket and extension through the wiring loom here. Once I got my socket on the nut, I bring my tool in and slowly take it out. And I'm gonna leave the socket and extension in there for now, so I can carefully get the nut out without losing it. And it'd be a good idea to have a magnet handy just in case you do drop any hardware.Next, we're gonna remove the upper hood catch and to do that, we need a 10-millimeter socket and our impact gun. And I am using an extension just to make it a little easier. So that was the uninstall of the passenger side hood catch. For the driver's side it is exactly the same, except you don't have to remove the air box.For the install process, we're gonna start by installing the upper hood catch. To do that, we're gonna use the supplied hardware, which is two bolts, two nuts, and two washers. The tools we'll need are a 10-millimeter socket and a number 4 Allen wrench. If the factory plastic got left behind, make sure you remove that before you start the install process. Also, these nuts are lock nuts. So make sure you put them on in the right direction. Use your number 4 Allen wrench to hold the bolt and tighten down with your 10. So we're gonna do a little bit of prep work on the Rugged Ridge catch before we install it onto the vehicle. We're gonna need a number 5 Allen wrench, and also a number 5 Allen socket. If you don't have that, you can use another number 5 wrench. So we're gonna remove this upper portion of the catch, and we're gonna remove it from the lower portion here so that we can get to this bolt to tighten it down when we install it on the vehicle. We have an Allen head nut and an Allen head bolt. So we're gonna remove those, get the upper portion of the catch off. And then there's the bolt that we're going to use to secure it to the vehicle. Now, we're gonna install the lower hood catch. We're gonna use the supplied hardware, which includes a bolt, a nut and a washer, and also a rubber hood bumper. The tools we're gonna need are a number 5 Allen wrench and the 13-millimeter swivel socket that we used earlier. So when you're installing the lower hood catch, just make sure that you have this rubber guard attached as well. And you're gonna have to finesse your hand in here with the nut. Again, a good idea to have a magnet just in case you drop it and thread it on as much as you can.Get your number 5 Allen wrench to hold the bolt, feed your socket through, and don't forget your rubber hood bumper. All right so I'm laying a cloth down, so I don't scratch the paint. I'm gonna reattach this portion of the hood catch. Hand thread the two hex head bolt and nut together. That's the nut cross-thread. And with your number 5 Allens, tighten it down. One thing to mention about these hood catches is they are adjustable. So you can adjust your hood gap. If you need to do that, use a 16-millimeter wrench, loosen this up, this bolt, the top one, and then you can spin the top part of the hood catch to lengthen it or shorten it as needed. Last but not least, let's reinstall our air box. Again, these are 10-millimeter, then don't forget your clamp. Tighten that down using your 8-millimeter sockets.Merideth: So that's gonna wrap it up for my review and the install of the Rugged Ridge hood catches in textured black fitting all 2007 to 2018 JK Wranglers.
